"You can never understand one language until you understand at least two"

At Scholes Village Primary School, we believe children deserve to:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say.
  • Discuss and ask questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

- OUR FRENCH CURRICULUM -

In our French curriculum, we follow a phonics-centred approach to learning French as a foreign language, created by Rachel Hawkes and Dr Marie-Odile Guillou. Ensuring children have a firm grasp of phonics enables them to become stronger, more independent learners of French.

For more information about this scheme, please refer to: https://www.rachelhawkes.com/Resources/KS2Lang.php

- A PHONICS APPROACH -

As in the example below, children in Year 3 begin learning French through French GPCs, using gestures to scaffold their first steps into a foreign language.

Children are encouraged to make the sound using a gesture to support, followed by using the sound in a word. Watch our Y3 children demonstrate below:
